A rededication service was held right this moment, 9 July 2024, on the graveside of CQMS John Doherty MM in Commonwealth Struggle Graves Fee’s (CWGC) Savy British Cemetery, close to Saint Quentin, France.
The situation was found after the soldier’s great-great-nephew submitted proof to CWGC hoping to determine his remaining resting place. Additional analysis by CWGC, the Nationwide Military Museum and Joint Casualty and Compassionate Centre (JCCC) confirmed his findings.
The service was attended by members of the prolonged Doherty household, who travelled from the UK and Eire to pay their respects. It was organised by the MOD’s JCCC, also referred to as the ‘MOD Struggle Detectives’, and was attended by serving troopers of The Royal Irish Regiment.

Chris Doherty, nice nephew of CQMS Doherty mentioned:
My grandfather William survived the warfare. His brothers John, Daniel and James all gave their lives so we may stay ours free, however William ensured that their names would by no means be forgotten. On behalf of the Doherty household, we want to thank and acknowledge the laborious work and dedication of Rosie Barron, the JCCC Struggle Detectives and their colleagues on the CWGC, who’ve given myself and my household the privilege of being current right this moment on the rededication of the ultimate resting place of our Grand Uncle, on this lovely setting and within the firm of his comrades, a few of whom he can have lived, fought and died with.

On the morning of 21 March 1918, the German Military launched Operation Michael, the primary part of its spring offensive, with the intention of defeating allies within the west earlier than the arrival of American troops. When the assault commenced, 1st Battalion The Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers have been situated at Le Hamel, southwest of Saint Quentin. They have been ordered as much as the battle space and remained of their positions underneath intense shellfire.
On 22 March 1918, the corporate was attacked and compelled again with heavy casualties. Round 40 males – all that remained of the battalion – continued combating the German Military. It has been a privilege to work with The Royal Irish Regiment to organise the rededication service for CQMS Doherty. His household suffered closely following World Struggle One, with 3 sons lacking after serving with The Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. For his or her widowed mom, this loss should have been profound. It has subsequently been becoming to have so lots of their household in attendance right this moment to have a good time the lifetime of CQMS Doherty and his brothers, and honour their sacrifice.
The service was carried out by the Reverend Jason Clarke MBE CF, Chaplain to 1st Battalion The Royal Irish Regiment. He mentioned:
At the moment we rededicate this grave, and acknowledge by title CQMS John Doherty. In so doing, we honour his reminiscence and provides thanks for his instance of braveness to the top. Within the horror of such horrible combating, he was devoted and true, combating alongside his males and giving his life within the defence of others.
The gravestone over the grave was changed by CWGC.
